Keith Curington

A sought after clinician, soloist, adjudicator and consultant, Keith J. Curington is director of choral activities at Park Hill High School, a growing and comprehensive choral program in Kansas City, MO. Before arriving in Kansas City, he spent five years as associate director of choral activities at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln where he conducted Concert Choir, All-Collegiate Chorus, Big Red Singers and taught courses in music education. In his position at Nebraska, Mr. Curington shared the administrative and programming responsibilities with Director of Choral Activities, Peter A. Eklund. He also served as associate conductor of University Singers, the premier choral ensemble at UNL that recently gave its debut performance at Carnegie Hall.

Before joining the UNL faculty, Keith directed choirs for nine years in Iowa and Illinois where his concert choirs and show ensembles were consistently rated among the finest.

Choirs under Curington's direction have performed a wide variety of music ranging from Tallis and Palestrina through Hammerschmidt, Haydn, Faure, Gounod, John Rutter and Mack Wilberg. Some larger works include; Daniel Pinkham's Christmas Cantata, Anders Orwall's Gaudete, and the Magnificat originally attributed to Pergolesi. Additionally, he has prepared his choirs for performances of Mozart’s Requiem, Dvorak's Mass in D (Op. 86), Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, and Ein Deutches Requiem by Brahms, Symphony No. 9 by Beethoven, Vivaldi's Gloria RV 589, Schubert Mass in G D167 and Gospel Mass by Robert Ray.

Curington is also the Associate Conductor of the Midwest Honor Choir, a touring choral ensemble that forms every other summer. In July 2008, the ensemble will again travel to Europe visiting eight countries performing in St. Mark's Basilica in Venice, Salzburg Cathedral, St. Stephen's in Vienna, St Paul's Cathedral in London, Notre Dame in Paris, and Canterbury Cathedral in England.

Curington holds a Master of Arts degree in music education from Western Illinois University and a Bachelor of Music Education from Iowa Wesleyan College and plans to finish his DMA in choral conducting from the University of Nebraska in 2008.  Peter A. Eklund, James Stegall, Burton Mahle, and Allen Chapman are professors who have greatly influenced his career in choral music. He has studied instrumental conducting with Jon Dugal and Ruth Keraus and has taken master classes from Andre Thomas and James Jordan.

Curington serves as Director of Music for St. Luke’s UMC in Kansas City, and is frequently in demand across the country as a soloist, director of honor choirs and choral adjudicator. He is twice listed in Who's Who in American Teachers and is an active member of the American Choral Directors Association and MENC.
